You're really turning into a bad example for me. I've LONG wanted to do DSL and Cable ISP in my lab. I've got part of the DSLAM and DOCSIS is future acquisition. You're both prolonging my time to acquire while encouraging me to do so at the same time.

Love the new cable broadband video. If you're getting deeper into first-mile access esoterica, I wonder whether you could find any similar vintage Cisco DSL equipment? GPON/XPON are probably too new but I wonder whether EPON prices have fallen into hobbyist territory. They're basically just DOCSIS for light. There's also that really weird EoVDSL thing that they were doing for a while [1]. I get the sense you'd get a kick out of playing with a bizarro-world Catalyst 2950 [2] that has a 25-pair Amphenol plug on the front and connects to little DSL modems on the other end. it didn't require any MAC configuration on the router, but I believe you can block or change speed settings, IP, etc per MAC address if needed
