Hi YummyTiger, Was just thinking, instead of crafting your entire games rigidly around the idea of save compatibility, why not write a tool that loads saves from the previous game(s), strips out the various variables and flags from those saves, and incorporates it into a new save in the save/database format of the new game?

Thanks! The author of the script got back to me and also suggested I save the script customization section into an external file. So, it sounds like this is a potential solution. He is going to help me set it up. Finally, some good news on the scripting front!

I found the source of the code. <a href="http://kaisou-ryouiki.sakura.ne.jp/material/rgss3/public_data.txt" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">http://kaisou-ryouiki.sakura.ne.jp/material/rgss3/public_data.txt</a> It's in japanese, however. but a bit of google translate should give you the jist of it. it isn't long, so should be easily converted to your means. looks like it just has you set up specific variables or switches to store, then you use the write public data command I said in the other comment to update. and the code contains credit to the scripter for any legal text. Note, I think it was originally written for VX, but it should also work for VX Ace.

It uses a file called 'PublicData' that it stores switches in, using scripts. Looking through it, it's just a line saying Script: PUBLIC_DATA.write_public_data I think there's a more advanced script being run, but I don't know the specifics.

By Rakshan's unpenetrated asshole, no picture?!? Blasphemy! ...that being said, savegame continuity is not that huge a deal for me - it's not like this game is a chore to slog through! If the external file option works, however, all the better!

Thanks. I'd say it is probably not a huge deal for chapter 1 and maybe chapter 2, but it would be annoying the further the game gets. I'd estimate this game will probably take around 15-20 hours to complete, maybe longer, that is quite a bit to replay. If savegames do not transfer, I've got a few ideas on how to allow players to simply skip chapters and get to the new content. This is challenging though given how dynamic the world is based on player choice.

Interesting, I'll keep this in mind. This might actually solve the problem. I'm not familiar enough with how RPG Maker uses external scripting, but I'll look into it. An example is definitely welcome.

Well, I'd say the prologue was worth releasing if you can use your savegames in the chapter 1 release, but I don't think it is worth replaying just for the prologue itself. Things are polished up and better, but not enough to warrant an entire playthrough just for the prologue. Plus, we are only a few weeks from chapter 1 at this point, so might as well just wait it out. If I do get things figured out for save game transfers, I'll release it.

I don't know the specifics, but I know it's possible to hold scripts and unlocked settings for variables and switches in an external file. Several dlsite games I've played have used this for unlocking scene galleries. Will mention later an example

Hey, why don't you just keep the idea of releasing the final prologue, i mean , games are not perfect when they are released, thats where patches come in. so i really wouldn't mind having that save problem right now, it would get problematic when more updates come out, but right now, i (and i guess many others) would play from the beginning again anyways without loading any saves.

Secular Reason

Honestly, it's not a big deal if we have to restart every time the new chapter comes in. It is best to do that anyway as new content can have issues with old, and if a new game isn't started we may not notice until so late that it is almost impossible to pinpoint where it went wrong.
