We were trying to make a mapping program in the 90s - way before the mass adoption of the internet and mobile data. We'd figured out ways to compress the map data and quickly navigate routes, but the GPS accuracy was so bad that we often couldn't tell which side of the block we were on. A few years after we'd scrapped the project, President Clinton unscrambled the GPS and things worked great, but by then the internet was a thing and our business model couldn't adapt. :(
