But before we get there I'd like to talk about one thing, because it's important to be self-critical. Looking at those photos, I must say that I'm not very happy with the chipping on the gun barrel, the rear and the left-rear side of the turret. I'd be okay with it if it was something like that Syrian T-90, but on a model like this, the chips are too big, even for my taste. I take full blame for that, because I was trying to chip and rust the turret in one evening, and I was getting quite tired towards the end, so I rushed the hell out of it. My idea was that rushing it on the T-90 (entire tank chipped in one afternoon) worked, so why it wouldn't work here, right? Well it didn't because it's not a beaten-up Syrian tank, that's why!
But it's not like the model is doomed, far worse things can happen. Also, and I already mentioned this, the rust tones and chips are quite heavily concentrated in some spots, but this won't be too much of an issue, as they'll get toned down heavily with dust and other dirty stuff... the usual stuff, I'm not even worried about it, but I though I'd give it a mention.
This brings me to one of my older models, a T-34/122 which looked like a wreck after the chipping stage, and the mud tones toned it down to a quite natural looking finish. i'll drop you a few pics in another post!

In that case, it would be toothpick time! In fact, I might resort to that because the turret won't get that much dirt anyway... luckily there's always time for that because Vallejo paints can be easily scraped away at any point.

I'm really trying hard (you know, my eyes...) to search for those "big" chips you are talking about but I don't know man, I feel all of them look awesome! I know you plan to tone them down with other techniques, but let's say you wanted to go with a less "dirty" tank, do you believe there may be a way to fix those big chips, like going back to the base color/distressing?
