First layer of chipping
🕑 Added 2020-10-19 19:44:16 +0000 UTCMy friends, it's been another cold and gloomy weekend, which meant more modelling. Well, not entirely. You see, I'm quite sensitive to season changes, especially when summer turns into autumn, which leads to me constantly feeling tired and sore. I remember as a kid, I would always get sick at the end of September. Always 🤒 So I stocked up on vitamins and magnesium and damn, does it do wonders! So what you see in this update isn't a result of the entire weekend and today, it's actually just last night and today.
I tried a more time efficient approach and it might actually work. Although not all chips are so aesthetically pleasing as they'd be if they were completely painted by brush - you see, I started the process with a sponge. This way I created most of the random shapes and patterns, which I then supplemented with more fine chips created with oil paints and speckling. This all took no more than an hour and a half including the clean-up of some unwanted specks. The rest was about brush painting. This meant connecting some of the sponge chips, refining their shape and outlining edges of the vehicle.
Again, not all of them are so pretty, which is a bit unfortunate, but they'll get refined with steel chips and subtle rust tones. In fact I'm pretty pumped about the next layer and I'm gonna try to chip at least one plate tonight. Obviously I don't wanna go crazy with steel chips here, and not all light chips are gonna be filled with dark grey.
The light yellow chipping color was mixed from 10 parts Ammo Dark Yellow and 3 parts Vallejo white. The oxide primer parts had to be chipped completely by brush as more precision is needed here and yes, the chipping is actually pink - Vallejo Beige Red which I find to be a very good chipping color for red primer.
So the next layer will be dark grey steel chips. Here I'll use a combination of Vallejo paints and brush painting, but also some VMS reverse chipping in selected areas. I'm saying selected areas because I'm afraid it might be too random of a technique for the darker camouflage colors, but might work perfectly on the dark yellow, hence why I'm gonna combine the two methods.
Anyway, it's gonna be a busy week!

Apply with a sponge the same way you'd do with normal acrylics, rub it with a paintbrush soaked with water until you're happy and then refine some of them into larger chips and of course add more chipping on the edges (you'll rub it off all protrusions which is where you want it to be in the first place)
