Infinite Dark - Marking Activation
🕑 Added 2021-01-05 10:35:22 +0000 UTCI'm into that phase of play-testing, now, which seeks to explore the edge cases of the rules. You know the sort of thing.
However, one thing I'm exploring is the size of fleets that the game practically accommodates and I'm pleased to say that, by and large, the game scales extremely well. But there is one down side, which occurs pretty quickly (from about four vessels upwards) and gets worse, which is keeping track of which vessels have activated.
I've brainstormed my options and they basically come down to either adding a token or taking a token away. Frankly, it's academic which one you choose. But it does mean that, what with momentum/vector markers, power markers and advantage/disadvantage markers already, a vessel can have as many as four marker "clusters" (with some clusters of up to three individual tokens) at any given time.
To me, this feels like too many. But what do you think? Can you think of a more elegant way of showing that a vessel has activated than adding or taking away a token (probably adding, tbh)?
This is exactly the sort of thing that AR tabletop gaming could deal with so well. Stick an RFID chip on every base and your AR headset would track every status, damage, heading and vector so neatly and even with cool special effects...

I would also like a dashboard, keeps things organized. Depends on the amount of ships used if dashboards are feasible.

I like this. The game itself leaves plenty of room for players to come up with their own solutions, but providing a paid-for dashboard solution at a modest cost would seem like a good option. I'll finish the rules first, then move on to this.

In the Ironsworn RPG they use paperclips along a track. You might be able to do something similar on a larger token. Maybe use a tiny binder clip instead. Track damage along the top half and power along the bottom and make it reversible so you can use it as an activation token. If you provide a template to print at home you get away from proprietary bases. I'd probably pay for a nicer version, but that's just me.
