Given that they literally destroyed Warhammer and started again, and the evolution from RT to 9th ed 40k, it’s fair to say that overwhelming market dominance (for many reasons) gives you a lot of wiggle room!

I considered not mentioning 40k at all, as it almost counts as category all of its own. But that would be to assume it could never go away, and that GW doesn't have to make an effort to sustain their market domination. And I wouldn't want them to think that was true... 😉

I'd say that putting the likes of 40K or AoS in any of these categories is unfair to the rest of the industry. Both games have factions that move between the various states, but the games themselves (relatively quickly for AoS considering the patchy first year or two) are beyond Stalwart and are essentially Bedrock, just as D&D is for RPGs. Even in what seemed their lowest years, when Privateer and Wyrd were seemingly snapping at their heels, they were still a gulf away from the extent of GW's core systems. Specialist games on the other hand... What's also interesting is how few battle games get any kind of traction - games can exploit the hotness and the release churn with much smaller figure counts. Kings of War claims Stalwart nature and perhaps can have a good claim now. Massed battle sci-fi / sci-fantasy games? With warmahordes done, that's it really. SAGA is probably nudging at Stalwart status, but a lot depends on what happens as events start up again over the coming months and years. But there are different stalwarts in the minatures idustry to be aware of - the companies that provide ranges of figures attached to no particular ruleset. Without them many an historial games designer without miniatures resource wouldn't be in business either.
