"CD / Alpha Channel" Updated Version (early access)
🕑 Added 2022-10-22 03:42:59 +0000 UTCSo,
I came pretty close to completely scrapping this episode and not releasing it outside Patreon. A knowledgeable patron had some technical notes, which made me realize that the already hard-to-follow info I present is not super accurate in places...
Too boring to explain, but basically, the general process of an alpha-over operation I describe differs from the way it's implemented by default in apps like After Effects.
While it would be too hard to redo major parts of the video, I decided to add a section kind of touching on the issue in a fun, over-dramatic way.
Did it make the information even more confusing? You bet! But the important thing is... there's now over a minute of extra, never-before-seen content in this new, digitally-remastered version!

I really enjoy these videos. I don't do any VFX work, but I love the technology behind it all. 10/10

Gee, you almost got to the level of a modern turbo encabulator gibberish rant at the end ...

When I saw that comment pop up, I knew it was gonna be trouble! Nice workaround!

Kids 2000 years from now will be learning from this. I’m glad it goes a little further down the rabbit hole. Nice job Captain and crew of interns.

Ah so THAT's what those black outlines are. I agree it IS a bit confusing, but only because you are being so kind as to translate more or less untranslatable technical artifacts, into normal human speak. Plus condensing it down to a few minutes rather than have it be a few hours.

Ah, I understand what that patron was saying now, but what I don't understand is how you made this correction in only a week?! Great work as always, hope you feel better about the whole affair now!

Masterfully patched. Glad you pushed through!

Looks effortless??? There's attention to detail, and then there's "...this was made by a crazy person".

You know that knowing about something makes you realize how much else you didn't know? XD that's this video for me. Imma gonna have to watch this a few times to completely grasp it, but it's good to know and is definitely a worthwhile addition to the "CD /" series :D

Brilliant! Pun intended.

Glad you're continuing with it. I work with alphas/comp all day. This video is niche and nerdy but fun so far.

thank you captain! amazing as usual, but still improving every time too. i think the highest achievement is how effortless these videos come across, it’s easy to forget while watching how much painstaking effort went into every second, and that’s an amazing achievement!

Love it as always!
