The formula for equilibrium is for the value of the weight * distance from the centre of the see-saw to be the same each side. So if the same weights are placed equally apart, they must weight the same to balance, if one is placed 10 times further from the centre than the other, it can be ten times lighter to balance out. ie, you can substitute weight for distance and still balance. Does anyone remember these mechanical column scales once used, maybe still used! in the doctors office? https://uk.secashop.com/products/measuring-stations-and-column-scales/seca-700/7001021008 They work the same way, slide the weights along the waybeam until you find a balance, then read off your weight.

Bob moved the container further back on the contraption, which changes how the weight is being distributed, meaning he would have to put less weight on than the other contestants to balance Alex. This is why Alex mentioned is was a good idea, but he would have to move it 3.5 meters further back for the pillar he added to do the trick. :D
