It's actually not dark to me. I believe its evolution or progression. The Anglosphere (UK, USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand) has always been tied culturally and not just Linguistically. They are all tied to the same democratic pillars and judicial structures inherited by the UK. They all had business plan created by the UK that they all still use to this day, and all those nations aside from New Zealand have the massive potential to grow that gameplan bigger than we can ourself (by population numbers) ... hence the fact that we are the parents - we've brought the kids up well, they've now left home and made successful lives, and were not old and tired and its time to move in with them while they look after us... its inevitable. its not a bad thing.

PROMS - We never had them when i was at school in the early to mid 90's, but by the time my Sister was at School 10 years laster (same time frame as this TV Show) they was a big thing... The UK is an Americanised country. Even the original (british) way i just spelled 'Americanised' is being superceded by the American way of using a 'z' instead of an 's'.., every generation since the advent on TV adopts more americanisms. The 51st state is incoming when the shit eventually hits the fan after many decades of suffering a post Brexit economy, and probably another war that brings us financially to the brink (the last one cost us the Empire) and we end up in grovelling for a trade deal with the US where we eventually sign the country over to them.... The change wont be overnight. Will be a slow process, The trade deal may be in our lifetime, but becoming the 51st state will most probably be a few generations after us. See it as the Parents in their old age (UK) will eventually end up moving in with their Kids (US) for support.

Yeah, I get you. But then again America do like their advertising, so I didn't know how much of that was just the usual over-hyping something that wasn't such a big deal in the real world? As for the extra rant, Skepta is a Londoner who makes (arguable) music and recently released a song about "gasoline", following up the line with something about a "cash machine". We don't call petrol gasoline and Americans don't call ATMs cash machines, so he is obviously very confused.

From what I gather from films, TV and social media, American kids make a HUGE deal out of proms. And now the new thing is the "promposals". They compare it to weddings for some reason and go all out crazy. I did not understand the extra rant 😅

Interesting! That sounds very different from any American experience. I think maybe since alcohol is illegal before 21 kids get off on drinking at 15-16 because they are not supposed to and they go too far. This is just mere speculation though, I know nothing of the subject 🤣🤣🤣

Proms in the UK are basically just a school disco for people in the end of their last year of school, there's no prom king and queen because that would be singling people out for being the best dressed and that's a no no because that would be seen as a form of bullying over here, UK schools are ridiculous when it comes to being PC, everyone has to get a participation certificate so no kid feels singled out. There can't be any real competition anymore.

I think maybe 8 people from my class of 30 went to the "year 11 ball", it was hard to convince teenagers to go to a party with their teachers at a place where you're not allowed to drink. But then again, the next generation down don't seem to know they're not Americans so maybe everything's changed since then.

I went to to school in the nineties and a prom was a weird thing they did in American films. We had school disco when we were about fourteen but nothing after that. As far as alcohol goes it can be pretty relaxed, I went on a school skiing trip to Austria when I was fifteen and a few of us went out drinking with our maths teacher.

Our prom was great, a TV was set up in room down the hall with the football. All the lads spent most of the night in there then couldn't understand why the ladies were angry at us 🤣

Hi Mandy! As far as I know, we've had an end-of-term dance/party at "high school", or equivalent, for a long time, but it was usually called a "school disco". The first time I remember it being referred to as a "prom" was actually the year I finished "high school", 1995. I thought then that this new branding was another import of American culture, probably as a result of the popularity of American coming-of-age shows and movies around that time. Just two years later, the idea, and specifically the word "prom" had become so entrenched that when my sister was coming up to hers, and had her friends round chatting excitedly about what they were going to wear and all that, and I casually referred to it as a "disco", they collectively sneered at me like I'd just ridden in on a penny-farthing. So I don't think you're wrong to think of it as an American thing, certainly by name, but yes, we do do them and have for some time. ☺️

First 🥇 today 13:01. I'm just here for story time. But that Alfa Romeo 😍. I want another so bad!!! Had this gorgeous little MiTo Clover leaf, 170bhp in white with black wheels. Carbon fibre trim interior with red backlighting. You put it in D-mode and it WENT! Miss that car. 😭😭 Proms are a thing in the UK but they are nowhere near as done up as American stuff. Ours was a quiet meal in tux and dress at the local parsonage. I got the award for best transport for rocking through the gate in my old man's lorry all done up. Horns blaring, light rigs on. Yeah, my high school cafeteria, or well, the stand was literally you went in, pre-ordered a choice of panini, burger etc. with a dessert. You could get cooked meals but they weren't that good. It was overbooked veg, drowned in gravy with a few scraps of meat to boot. Or you had super dry burgers, chips, beans. Basically it was a Carbs overload and they wonder why obesity in children is an issue. Hope you're having a lovely weekend it's pissing rain here so no flying for me. 😡 Liked this episode.
