Indeed! I'm sure the net tank-top was there for comic effect. I believe the gaps are to trap air and hence be warmer in winter than a normal cotton under-shirt, but as I say, very obsolete and an object of hilarity even back then. 👍🏾

Hi Mandy! I was born the year this came out, but I do remember as a child in the 80s that any time an adult referred to "one of those" with a disapproving sneer, they invariably meant a "member of the LGBTQ+ community" as it wasn't known. Less enlightened, less tolerant times. As far as the "wife-beater" goes, we just call it a vest, it is extremely uncommon now, but in my experience, men born in the first half of the 20th century very often wore them, and perhaps still do. I believe my dad still does for example. It's usually accompanied by stained Y-fronts and socks with holes worn through the toes. It's not the best look.

That's not "what happens when you lie" - that's what happens when you are Basil. 😁 The string vest (as it is called in the UK) that Basil is wearing under his shirt is not common. Not now at least, a bit more so 45 years ago when this was made, but never what you would call a fashion item! Men in the UK do not normally wear anything under a shirt - though I notice it still seems quite common in the US for some reason.

Worst part is there are loads of people who are actually like that, you just can't do right for doing wrong. 😔 Nicely handled tho. When they mentioned fighting I wondered: I bet Mandy's had at least one proper cat fight.
