I can take pics if you want some, it’s meant to be sunny this weekend, Oxford would make a nice day trip 😎 I couldn’t find a picture of Mike’s broken glass sculpture 😢 Like a stereotypical Oz, Sarah barbecued the ice 🧊 😆 Sarah Kendall *IS* actually meant to be a comedian who gets laughs 🤣 Okaaaay, lets compare the “cost" (computational complexity) of the knuckles method to the rhyme method 😁 Lets assume we all know ahead of time February has 28/9 days so doesn’t involve any cost. Knuckles Method The “cost” of finding the length of each month involves counting knuckles this many times: Jan: 1, Feb: 0, Mar: 3, Apr: 4, May: 5, Jun: 6, Jul: 7, Aug: 8, Sep: 9, Oct: 10, Nov: 11, Dec: 12 So the average number of “steps” or counts using the knuckle method, for a randomly chosen month is: (1+0+3+4+5+6+7+8+9+10+11+12)/12 or 6.333 counts. Rhyme Method “30 days in September, April June and November” all the rest are 31 except February. The “cost” of finding the length of each month involves checking to see if your month is one of “September, April, June or November” if it is none of these, it has 31 days. Eg for January: Jan is not Sep, Jan is not Apr, Jan is not Jun, Jan is not Nov, so it has 31 days. This took 4 comparisons to find out. If we count month comparisons for the Rhyme method, we have: Jan: 4, Feb: 0, Mar: 4, Apr: 2, May: 4, Jun: 3, Jul: 4, Aug: 4, Sep: 1, Oct: 4, Nov: 4, Dec: 4 So the average number of “steps” or month comparisons using the Rhyme method for a randomly chosen month is: (4+0+4+2+4+3+4+4+1+4+4+4)/12 or 3.166 comparisons. Therefore the “Rhyme” method is twice as efficient! It takes exactly half the number of steps as the “Knuckles” method for a random month, assuming we only know about February before hand. I prefer the rhyme method because all I have to remember are those four months: Sep, Apr, Jun and Nov, the rest works itself out. I’d never heard of the knuckles method before though - and it’s neat that between the two hands there’s two consecutive 31 day months! July and August were given 31 days to reflect their importance, they’re named after two Roman Leaders Julius Caesar and his successor Augustus. “My Very Elegant Mother Just Served Us Nine Pizzas” gonna remember that mnemonic. You should read Juan Tamariz book “Mnemonica” It teaches you how to remember a specific order of a deck of cards, it’s full of mnemonic aid exercises to help you remember. At one point I remembered the entire deck order. The amazing thing is, after creating several different very personal mnemonic aids, and completely scribbling over a practice deck of cards with your crazy “clues”, then a whole load of practice practice and more practice, you don’t need to rely on your silly mnemonics any more and your brain makes the direct associations. 🥳 What I mean is, with enough practice you can train your brain to map any month to directly recall its number of days, it really isn’t that hard, just takes a little practice. Mandy! It’s INCY WINCY SPIDER 📣😃 🤣 The water restriction’s a big thing in airports, it’s practically the first thing they take off you. Yes summer is just 1 month in the UK. 2 weeks in June, then 2 weeks in August. 🤪 I think Mike was trying to make a long fishing rod contraption on the steam task, but it was too heavy and fell apart. That months rhyme always used to bother me - because October and December rhyme too - which ones do i use?!. Thanks for explaining the knuckles one I might use that in future. Since you sussed the scrabble months thing out I think you would do very well at Lee Mack's quiz show, Mandy, "100% Club" it is full of pattern spotting questions like that.

Oh, sweet innocent child. 😁 The bamboo sticks were taped together but they both realised it would not work when they tested it cos' they broke, so abandoned the idea quickly before they even tried to use them. Well, you just made my week by pointing out all the days in the months are alternately 31 and 30 except February and July/August! I never noticed that before! Never seen anyone over here do the knuckle thing - just the silly poem. On balance, I prefer the knuckles!
