Hey, guys. I'm sure some of you are already aware of this, but today (friday) is a big day for someone who is a little bit special to many of us. I think at least a few - if not most of you will agree with me - that it is certainly a day to be celebrated. Today marks another milestone for an amazingly talented and creative person who over the months and years has brought us so much joy. 🤗 At times without even knowing it they have become a best friend who we've never met, who picks us up and gets us back on our feet if we ever find ourselves feeling down, and never fails to leave us still smiling even long after we're done listening. So later on this evening I'm going to be raising a glass to celebrate, and maybe one or two will consider joining me in being grateful for having had them impact our lives, and in feeling so blessed that we have had the chance to make THIS briefest of cameos in theirs. So 1 shilling = 5 pence in modern money) A £1 coin was called a Sovereign and was made of gold 1 guinea = £1-1s-0d ( £1/1/- ) = one pound and one shilling = 21 shillings or 21/- (which is £1.05 in todays money) The 'd' = penny (for 'denarius', a Roman silver coin) So if someone said to you thirteen and sixpence ha'penny it meant £0/13s/6 1/2d To people who were used to it it was second nature but obviously tourists to the UK and its commonwealth would have found it baffling and could eaasily be scammed.

Others have explained the Pounds/shilling/pence malarkey, so I figured I would add to the historical shenanigans... As I understand it, the "L/s/d" (Pound/shilling/pence) comes from the Roman "Librae/solidus/denarii" system, where 12 denarii = 1 solidus and 20 solidus = 1 librae (the same as with £/s/d) . It did not arise directly from Roman Britain however - it was imported much later from continental Europe. The first pennies were made from silver (there's inflation for you!) and 240 of them (allegedly) weighed a pound, hence why 1 UK pound (£) is named the same as a pound in weight. If you were paying for things in silver (as one often did back then) the coins would be weighed rather than taking the value of each one for granted. The Pound Sterling sign '£' is just a fancy capital 'L' for "Librae" ("librae" was Roman for a pound in weight). Not funny, and not particularly clever or interesting, but sufficiently obscure and dry to keep the average nerd awake for an extra 3 minutes... 😸

Just because you asked 😃 Pre 1971… “Sixp’nce” pronounced without the ‘e’ but spelled with an ‘e’ is basically a coin valued at 6p or 6 pence. Tuppence was the name of a 2p coin. “Haypenny” is another word for a half penny coin. “Farthing” (with the ‘h’ definitely pronounced) was 1/4 of a penny. Money, pre 1971 was divided into Pounds, Shillings and Pence. Penny or Pence, when written, used to be abbreviated as ‘d’ not ‘p’, for some reason. There were 240d in £1 (sometimes £1 was written as 1l (lower case L) A shilling was 12d, and sometimes written as “s” “/“ or “/-“ if there were no pence value after that, and there were 20/- (shillings) in a pound. So the currency was written as LSD, which is what the person, that came up with it, must have been on. I hope that clarifies everything 🫤 People, apparently, complained when the UK switched to a decimal system (£1 = 100p), saying it was far too complicated. 🙂 History lesson over… you did ask 🤗

Blackadder is hyphenated at the beginning because when there's not enough space for a word (as it would go over the edge of the page if you kept going), in some forms of English the convention is you just put as much of the word as you can fit, then a hyphen, then finish the word on the next line. It's still "Blackadder" though, all one word. I think the hyphen being squiggly there is just a stylistic choice.

Before 1971 the UK had a different currency system originally based on the old Roman currency system. It was called pounds, shillings and pence and unlike modern currency it wasn't based on decimals. They kept the names of certain currencies but the values were different. Because it was very easy to divide the old currency by different fractions, a lot of lesser coins were available. 'Tuppence' meant 2 pence (pennies), 'Haypnee' referred to a halfpenny, Sixpence was 6 pennies etc. £1 was worth 240 pennies so when Edmund came back from prostituting Baldrick at the docks with sixpence it meant Edmund was only 239994 pennies short of his £1000 target...
