The shroud around the barrel is protect it from impacts with hard objects like trees. The 25mm on the Bradley actually had a redesigned fluted design that would break before it bent so it could be still used without losing accuracy. Apparently this happened more often then not :)

is that "just" a barrel shroud, like on a machine gun? Seems unlikely, but what else would it be for?
