Black and white!
🕑 Added 2024-07-20 15:11:50 +0000 UTCMy friends, the pre-shading is finished. This is the so-called Black and White Technique developed by Jose Luis Lopez.
It has quite a lot of applications, and it's basically the same method as figure painting, just adapted to armor.
I'd say it's excellent for single color base coats and for people who are not very confident with mixing their own colors for post-shading. Here you're just working with black and white, so the process is very straightforward.
There are some additional steps that can be employed such as a black pin wash, stains of dirt painted with black acrylic, light chips painted with white, etc. but I find these a bit redundant as some of them would've been repeated twice, such as the wash.
Anyway, I'll let the paints cure for a few hours and then apply the oxide primer!

Black and white tends to push the oxide primer towards the desaturated/pinkish spectrum, but I actually like that! If I was going to post-shade the oxide red, I'd use Buff or Deck Tan for the highlights, which would lead to a similar result. Luckily, if it's too much, you can adjust it with orange and red oil paints later!

You can play around with additional effects on this pre-shaded surface, but I'd rather add them on the painted model :)

Looks good. I always tend to think that if your project looks good at every stage of the finishing process (good as in I could stop and although it wouldn't be finished, its pleasing to look at) then its going to look great when everything is done. Doesn't always go like that mind you!

It almost looks like winter Camo. Its very convincing. In figure painting its referred to as Zenithal Priming if people wish to search it on Google. Is a lot of information out there on the subject. One advantage in figure painting is you can use very thin glazes of paint over it to build up colors. Many companies have entire ranges of these glaze like paints often referred to as Contrast paint.
