Basic colors on!
🕑 Added 2024-07-20 22:42:22 +0000 UTCMy friends, here's the pre-shaded surface covered with the basic color shades. The irony of this technique is how you spend 8-10 hours messing around with black and white, and then about 30 minutes with the red primer.
Now, obviously, the model is extremely shiny because I added about 50% of gloss varnish into each color for extra translucency. It also creates the perfect surface for the decals! Oh yeah, the oxide red recipe is 8 parts Flat Red, 1 part Flat Brown, 1 part Deck Tan. All from Tamiya.
The instructions and the box art suggest that the wheels and the main gun ball mount are painted in oxide as well, but the historical photos clearly show that these are much lighter than the hull, so it's obviously dark yellow. The only logical option for the gun barrel is the heat-resistant grey primer.
Okay, the only downside of this technique is that if you mess up the paint mixture, there's no going back. Only forward with post-shading and further lightening and adjusting... which kinda defeats the whole purpose of pre-shading, right? :D But luckily, I'm pretty happy with the oxide color.
It's funny how I like the primer much more vivid when I'm doing chips on German armor (such as the flaking Zimmerit on the Jagdpanther) but for vehicles completely painted in this color, I like it with a visible touch of brown, sort of brick red tone. When I painted my Maus, I went with a similar tone, but actually a touch darker.
Let's just hope now that the decals are gonna be of high quality because they're gonna cover a good half of the model's surface!

Definitely, but learning from this model, I'd make the Dunkelgelb mixture more vivid by adding pure yellow. The pre-shading desaturates it quite a lot!

Yes, this Ferdinand is looking great so far. The light to dark, on the oxide red, came out fantastic, Martin. I know you have more to go on this, but it’s almost creating a an artificial light source. Like if the vehicle was still inside the factory. I like how you’re including photos of your step process as well 👍😎

Seems a cool technique for single color vehicles. Would you also use it say for a ‚Dunkelgelb‘- only vehicle?
