Off to a good start!
🕑 Added 2024-07-09 13:34:32 +0000 UTCMy friends, I started assembling the Ferdinand yesterday and so far it's been a fun model. After a long time, I was able to ignore the construction steps and focus on the main body of the vehicle. There are lots of weld lines that had to be re-scribed with chisels, and some welds that weren't even represented in the kit! Those are located on the lower rear plate.
I also added the basic steel textures with a combo of Tamiya putty and Mr. Cement S. These were gently polished with a sponge, and the excess was removed from the armor plate cross-sections. I also added a bunch of other details to the hull, mainly those that will also have welds around them.
The engine deck is dry-fitted for now, as well as the superstructure. The next step is gonna transform it into a heavy metal beast! Welding!
Also, I had a set of 3D-printed Elefant tracks from Panzerwerk lying around. But then I realized that the Elefant had small ice cleats on the tracks, while Ferdinand had three rectangular blocks. In other words, wrong tracks! So I quickly ordered a set of Friuls, and while I was at it, I added a basic Eduard PE set into the basket. After a pretty long while, I'll be working with blackened metal tracks again! The last model to sport these was the Karl Mortar!
PS: Some of you suggested a bunch of 3D designed correction details for this model which are available to purchase on Cults3D. I looked at them and while they look good, my printer wouldn't do them justice. In fact, I've been considering a new 14K printer for a while, but my current expenses in the backyard are the main priority.

It's really the same technique as always :) A big wrecked flat brush for the large areas and a smaller brush around details, followed by gentle polishing with a sanding sponge.

Totally understand your priorities. I think my interests lies in the Red primer scheme and factory setting. However, I hope you do get a printer soon. I am eager to see what you do with newer 3D printing technology.

It's a lot of fun, but it can consume you. I start building a model and look at a piece and check references and I'm creating a file and printing a new part or checking sites like Cults3D for upgrades.

I have the Saturn # as well, and yes, it is a great printer. The Saturn 4 is on pre-order for $300 right now and it has some cool features.

Are you planning to do some interior work? I think I'll get some exterior parts from cults3d. I would have loved to build the interior and the engines and stuff but you hardly can see it, even with some of the panels removed.

the rack holding all the plastic parts is handy, better than digging through the box for 5 minutes. i'll have to get those shelves.

For 1/35 scale, a Mars or Saturn printer will do perfectly. I use a Saturn 3 ultra and I love it. Doesn't break the bank either. I'm excited to see this model come together and understand the inaccuracies as I have the Ferdinand kit with the full interior to build

I'm tempted to buy this kit! :) Speaking of 3D Printers, I have a UniFormation GK TWO, and it's been good! A few days ago, I was able to print a 1/16 figure, so I believe it was worth the $850 dollars or so that I spent on it.

If you’re looking to save some money on a new 3D printer, you really don’t need a 12-14k printer-it’s all marketing at this point without a major improvement in print detail. If you need a larger printing area (10 inch screen or larger) the higher 12k printing resolution would be useful. A Sonic Mini 8k or Mini 8k S would be a nice improvement over what you have now.
