Huge transformation!
🕑 Added 2024-09-16 23:58:49 +0000 UTCMy friends, after some enamel washes, some oil paint filters, detail painting, additional chipping and more FX done with oil paints, the Land Rover has changed quite a lot! At this point it's ready to get grimy and mossy!
So I started with an enamel wash, as usual. I went with Winter Streaking Grime which has a slight greenish tint, excellent for the finish I'm chasing. Then I changed the tone of the yellow color by applying ochre and light rust filters made from oil paints. The Ledbury sign got heavily toned down by these techniques, so I carefully painted over it with a fine brush and white acrylic.
After that... I actually don't remember! :D I think then it was about detail painting, stuff like the metallic details on the body, the dark grey parts of the doors, window seals, etc. The flatbed and the rear bumper received a slightly heavy filter with light and dark rust oil paints.
The second round of chipping was carried out with Offwhite acrylic because just as the sign, the HS chipping got toned down way too much. I also painted some steel chips on the orange sign on the roof, added rust with oil paints, and also treated the wheels. The tyres were base coated with rubber black (the new AK Markers came in really handy here), and some visual interest was added with diluted Graphite acrylic. They just need some mossy stains and they're finished!
I also need to finish the mirrors before I start with the grime and moss deposits that are visible on the real car. The crane is pretty much finished as well, just some grease stains have to be added. After that, I can assemble the flatbed and add the assorted junk that's visible in the ref. photo!

Man.... It looks awesome. weathering is my favorite part of this hobby and you make look even better. Especially the rust parts and grimy stuff

I will say doing things in a more streamlined way is not bad but shows maturity in what you do. If you are still producing amazing work, then it is all for the better. You are not the average modeler who can take the time to do every detail you wish to do. You are making content that we all love and want to see what you are doing every day. Photos, typed out descriptions and videos, plus messages and replying to everything takes time. That time has to come from someplace as, I am guessing, you still want a life outside of modeling?? :) This is way too long....... You do you sir:) We all love what you do.

That is such a great question, Kevin. I think the simplification that Martin refers to is absolutely typical of craftsmen and artists, as their skills and visions mature. I'll never get there (I'm just a part-time aircraft modeler), but I think Martin's work - to steal your word from your comment above - has reached the "sublime" level!

That's an interesting insight, Kevin. When I look back, I actually notice that the older paint jobs were more elaborate - as time progresses and I try to focus on the diorama as a complete picture, I tend to simplify things. Sometimes I wonder if people notice that trend as well and if they feel dissatisfied with it.
