Hey, I really liked this as usual. I wanted to share a bit of this with someone who doesn't really get on with video, do you still post transcripts somewhere?

Really good thoughts. I'm a bit conflicted on several points, having been in the game industry for 25 years, I'm still fond of the buy-it-once model, but I also see the forces that are pushing us to deliver always on, always evolving platform/games. In fact, I'm working on one right now called Blanko's Block Party. (Pretty sure we had our name before the quote you read about fortnite being a block party was written, haha) One thing I do wanna say is that I'm pretty sure there's nothing intrinsic in the format of fortnite that requires shitty work/life balance. That's just 90% of the game industry. But who knows, our little company is heading into alpha, so things may hit the fan for us too. Time will tell. Although I worked on Guild Wars games for 15 years and almost never crunched there despite being an always-on live platform.

It's funny how every player ignoring the battle royale to different degrees and focusing on individual tasks and social relationships is a LOT closer to the original film Battle Royale.

Great stuff as always! Weird hearing background on a game whose lifecycle was so recent but interesting analysis of game design that I've always thought was neat but not worth the time Really appreciate you talking about crunch at the end and reiterating the preadatory model it's based on as well 👍
