Standard is definitely too easy and Hardcore is mostly fair but has some rough difficulty spikes if it's your first playthrough. On NG+ Hardcore is crazy easy. I'm going into NG++ on Village of Shadows difficulty with Infinite S.T.A.K.E Magnum ammo. I expect little-to-no trouble. DEFINITELY suggest Hardcore for first playthrough.

I restarted my play through 30 minutes in to change the difficulty to hardcore after Huber suggested it. Died like 8 times in a row during the Village ambush in the beginning and that sucked all the fun out of it for me. Went back to my standard difficult save file and now I haven’t died once after 5 hours of playing and I have tons of ammo. So basically both difficulties are disappointing for different reasons. Still love the game overall though.

Is that Lycan battle pretty representative of the difficulty of the rest of the game? I prefer to play on hardcore because I’ve been hearing that standard is too easy, but if the whole game is gonna be like that one section I don’t think I’ll enjoy it. Was it just an insane difficulty spike? I finally got through it but wondering if I should turn back now.
