While Nuzlocke runs are indeed a way to add challenge to a Pokemon playthrough, what they were originally created and intended for was instead as a way to help players bond more with their Pokemon so they'd feel less like disposable digital tools. That's why you were only supposed to catch the first you encounter on a route (similar to how you'd see in the anime) and nickname your fated encounters. The rule that you could not use them again after they faint is also supposed to make you more invested in the well-being of each one. There's typically also rules involving item spam usage to mitigate being able to overcome challenge that way versus through the merits of the Pokemon you carefully raised and should be relying upon. Back to the subject of self imposed challenge runs. More exist beyond Nuzlocke runs. One of my favorites is MonoType runs where you pick one of the eighteen types and only use Pokemon that include that type throughout your run, although dualtypes are generally allowed as well, and of course you can use your starter until you get to a Pokemon of the type you choose at the beginning. In my experience, those kinds of playthroughs can be a very fun experience that pushes you to try Pokemon you wouldn't otherwise.
