You guys actually think this is a positive for the industry? All those “capitalism bad”comments that got thrown around from time to time just took on a whole new level of cringe.

I’m kind of surprised at how upbeat and excited the tone was on this. It’s shocking news and probably a net positive for the employees of AB, but the consolidation trend in the entertainment market has me seriously bummed. Yes there are many studios out there, but the triple AAA 3rd party studios are looking pretty thin. My Game Pass subscription just got a lot better, but at what cost in the long term? I think consolidation will make for a weaker and less interesting industry over time.
One point that I feel like I'm on an island with - with this purchase, Microsoft can single-handedly legitimize the spread/adoption of NFTs while simultaneously cornering a massive corner of the digital economy. That would also be 100% in line with their "metaverse" aspirations that they noted in their press releases. This gives me tremendous existential dread.
