So, with the title and the theme, and the effects that kicks off France's attitudes and policies over the famine, how did this END for the various states involved? I LOVE the comprehensive look at these decades, but does it all tie back into the "years without summer"? That seems to drop off as Metternich and then Canning get in the game and start their time at the helm. Is it a running undertone for the entire period?

I think HC’s point on the Monroe doctrine was that it was Canning who considered it to not help the americans so much. Certainly if we consider the monroe doctrine in the latter 19thC and beyond then i’d agree with you, but it was not so clear at the time that US would have the ability to enforce it. Remember this was only 10 years after British troops burnt down the white house!

As an American I thought the American jokes were funny, although I do think the take that the United States didn't benefit at all from the Monroe Doctrine is rather naïve. Every reason brought up on how the British benefitted from the agreement goes for the US as well, I'd say arguably more so in our favor; we were able to gain the world's largest navy as an ally in our own developing sphere-of-influence effectively negating the possibility of having to deal with European powers ourselves, allowing the US a free hand to develop into a Great Power as it historically did so without any major conflicts with other Great Powers. The Monroe Doctrine remained the de jure justification for American imperialism and growth throughout not just the second half of the 19th century, but entirety of the 20th century as well.

Is this...a joke? I can't tell if this is a joke or not. I think it's supposed to be a joke? Jokes aside, I wonder if the narrative of the Monroe Doctrine being "a diplomatic coup for the British" perhaps allows the United States to shed blame for its role in the atrocities that occurred in South and Central America (the banana republics, Gran Colombia, etc.) It seems to me that this was foreshadowed (39:26 or whereabouts), so I am looking forward to a future video that goes deeper into 19th century American imperialism. Thank you, Historia Civilis, and, uh, God bless America I guess. Hot dog is (a lot less ironically than I'm willing to admit) my favorite meat, though; I feel very attacked.
