The Navigator aspect of Erf has demonstrated themselves to take their duties very seriously, more of a life's calling than a job. If there were any crewmen or passengers aboard Lif, I think Erf would have tried to search for other shuttles even back in Wisher Beware, or at least mention it in an internal monologue. There's a possibility that information didn't carry over with the nanite transfer, but losing mission critical data like that seems counter to the thorough and meticulous nature of the Navigator, especially if it put crewmembers' lives at risk. Finally, Snus has been pretty firm on Lif not being the source of any local legends or mysterious phenomena mentioned so far, so I'll take his word on that.

I'd also be interested in a hardcopy for my collection. :)

Thank you, thank you Snus, that was hilarious! On the other comments, ohhhh where to start. On the Shaman front, imagine if Paul from the Dune series (the shaman) used the Voice and yelled "Die!" at his enemy only to hear in his head "Incorrect Handshake". That's why I'm rolling over here! On the 'other humans' front, a reminder that Lif is a living ship, Erf is its Navigator, and all ships have crew, which Erf has mentioned previously is mostly, if not all, human. Said crew is most likely with a variant of Harald as required kit to communicate with Lif and the Navigator. I believe Erf said as much when he 'found' Harald. Basic headsets as opposed to a full deep-space comm suite, if you will. I have suspicions and speculations, but I REALLY want to see how this plays out, and don't want to influence Snus' writing.

Grayvisc

Ooooooh. I’m definitely gonna have to reread that later.

Snus

Harald is a part of Erf. The first scene is Erf (who has Harald inside of him) They don't ever separate and this is Erf is talking about the battle as it happened through his eyes until shaman started chanting and tried to hack his internal router system.

Paul Barron

Well, I'm glad to at least hear you are leaning that way. I look forward to when they come out.

Snus

It wasn't the shaman that said those. He was hearing Harald talking (hence why there is a quip saying he doesnt know what that was). All shaman knew that it had thoughts of eldritch kind and ignored them as he kept pushing his commad (die) and got a second response from Harald that initiated download.

Snus

I do hope to do so. but WB is a mess of edits waiting to happen and *gestures wildly at the current release pattern* i have this...

Snus

magic can interact with the rest of the world and others can be affected by it. Erf just doesn't grok how that interaction occurs.

I thought the same but I think Erf said said something that made me reconsider. Regardless I think more humans have been to Tana asides from Erf. Proof of that is this chapter, somehow Shamans new that by telling a creature with flow "Incorrect handshake" they could confuse a creature. That's not something a wermage figures out randomly on their own. Someone must have told them that, someone that new of humans, and I doubt Lif is even able to communicate with anyone that's not Erf or enhanced with nanites. It's very likely that some other humans have been to Tana and have had a hand in creating creatures and likely way more than that. Considering the red trees are said to be the only thing that's not "similar" to any life known to Erf my guess is that likely red trees are the only thing that's actually native to Tana, animals were likely only brought to Tana, creatures are likely the result of trying to use live tech together with the red trees to produce something magical, and lastly wermages are probably humans trying and succeeding in getting to greater heights using the previous experiments to create a magical organ and the animal features I can only explain by the humans being furries, we are not safe from the furriest even in space.

Grayvisc

I got a bit confused there. Almost seemed like a small time skip. We start off with Harald offing a few enemy scouts but then Erf somehow already has Harald back? Myself I just haven’t had enough coffee.

Viper

There were a few times I thought Lif created the creatures and the spread of the forest looking for Erf when he crash landed.

Vabenil

So this is proof the Crea-, Things, are either artificial or have artificial origin. Shamans likely have wisdom from pioneers of the world on how to connect and confuse creatures. So my best guess is that either many years ago creatures were created by a ship and they somehow have some method to reproduce or there is a sort of creature factory in the world perpetually spawning new creatures, but then that would imply that creatures serve some sort of purpose and also implies that if someone has the correct way to "communicate" with a creature, say, using Harald you could control it.

Paul Barron

I'm sure it's been asked somewhere by someone. But are there any plans to release these books on any platforms in digital or hardcopy for us to buy?

Viper

But said software can connect to Flow? Or their mind through their own connection?

Tupperwarez

Also, there's the occasional swapping between Jargal and Jergal. Unless Jargal is a rank, and his name is Jergal. If that's the case, Erf just juggled Jargal Jergal!

Jim Payne

All I could think of was Boris from goldeneye: “Ha! Spiked ‘em!”

Snus

The current observations are merely that. But all I could say without spoilers is that Flow isnt't software. Different cultures add their flavour to magic despite sharing the language

Snus

Thank you I know is shouldn't type at night but i wanted to finish it asap

Tupperwarez

>I showed the mug in my face shoved?

Tupperwarez

I choose to imagine that the shamans' songs are like Mongolian throat singing. Also, the Barsasahrs' framing of Flow as a song continues. Poor guy, tried to hack Harald with Flow and got his firmware bricked... A swords and sorcery interpretation of a cyberpunk hacker getting fried by a security program, now that I think about it. Although in this guy's case it was more of an unhelpfully helpful OS... Come to think of it, if the Flow organ Erf discovered is the 'hardware', and the spell thought could be the 'firmware', would that make Flow a kind of 'software'? It's intangible nature and how mages gain power through a higher understanding of math sort of fit?

Amelgar

>Anaise Hilal becomes the eldest daughter of the Kamshad Matriarch Kiymetl Matriach?
