Yeah - it was kinda low budget even for the time. But the middle-budget films kinda disappeared in the new milliennium… other than indie of course. But a good “sunday film”, kinda good if it is on cable, but not worth the money to warrant a trip to the theater… there are a ton of these (mainly crime and or sci-fi) films from the late 80’s to the late 90’s - they kinda disappeared. A bit of a shame. And a bit like the video game market actually. And with it the ambition kinda went away as well. But both Dark City and Matrix had loads of ambitions.

And yes, I did a ton of research about the Dark City / The Matrix connections, and am covering that in detail. The plagiarism claims don't hold much water, but one of the producers of Dark City convinced the Matrix team to film in Sydney as well, and re-used a few sets and locations for cost purposes. They had to stretch just 40 million dollars pretty far, that's why they were filming in Australia in the first place.

I'm very familiar with Alex Proyas' work, and Dark City is being mentioned a bit in Part 3, in the "simulation theory" section at the end of my video. Love The Crow, and Dark City has some amazing concepts and set design as well.

Elgar - I second that - thought about the escape into RPGs (and that it is probably the most valuable aspect of them for me - do i believe in their world) for a long time. Neverknowsbest (I assume you know the guy) did touch upon it in his TES-videos as well. By the way, Indigo - maybe u know already, but Dark City (being a commercial familier I gather) had some cool scenery/props that was actually reused in the Matrix (perhaps to cover loses, don’t know really). Gr8 kinda forgotten film, when u consider the director did both The Crow and I, Robot

Escapism is a very interesting topic. I'd like to delve into that at some point when I come up with insightful things to say about it!

Sounds great man. Really looking forward to it. Your documentaries are truly valuable. It must be hard to put in so much effort and keep the quality at this level when support for your channel is not at the level you deserve (which baffles me). Keep at it and I'm sure you'll be rewarded in some way at some point. I don't know if this is a good place for a suggestion, but I've been thinking a lot about how RPGs allow us to escape into a different world, a different life, and while that can provide unique experiences and life long memories, it can also lead to situations where one might prefer to play instead of facing real life. As with all art, there's a balance to be found there, but video gaming and RPGs especially are unique as an art medium in that they allow for such immersion. This is a conversation that can branch out chaotically, I understand that. It's huge. But maybe you could share your thoughts on some part of the grand spectrum of the matter. Maybe looking at addiction to games that goes beyond dopamine hits (I'm not talking about gacha addiction here obviously). The yearning for exploration and adventure, and a coping mechanism for life. Is it addiction or just an advanced human need? Is it dangerous, if at all? In what ways? I know you have cyberpunk burnout, but this topic could be a good follow up to the Cyberpunk documentary (specifically due to VR and the Matrix), without it actually being about Cyberpunk.
