The difference for me, between In Sickness... and Curry & Chips is that, as you say, Alf gets his comeuppance constantly. He's always laughed at, and never with (except by the audience). He's still getting laughs for the racist stuff, but always shows his arse in the end. Curry & Chips totally removes that element, and I'm not sure what Speight was thinking. There's a lot of fuss every year round here from 'patriots' complaining we're not allowed a Zulu in the bonfire anymore. The traditional Littlehampton Zulu, a white guy in full blackface, necklace of shrunken heads, and an actual bone through his nose, was a fixture in the highstreet every late October from the 60s until about ten years ago. They still do the 'red Indian' stuff, mind, feather headdresses and red faces, in their dozens.

Jesus, I’d never heard of this, absolutely dire. Considering it involves two iconic British comic greats (Milligan, Sykes) there’s not even a small part of me that wants to look, even out of curiosity. I hadn’t watched ‘In Sickness...’ since I was a kid (and doubt I was understanding much) so, I revisited it a few years back. I didn’t get far. Although, it’s clear the character of Garnett is used to spoof bigots, I wish it had been done with much more broad of a stroke. Unlike a Partridge character, who has dashes of realism, but ultimately is clearly a character, who constantly suffers for his attitude. Garnett continues on and as you said, you can totally imagine a very similar individual angrily promoting Brexit while getting red-faced (and in private getting black faced) Fun fact - New Year’s Day, a load of people near me went out in fancy dress, a massive amount had ‘blacked up’. Just stuns me.
