Sorry about your dad, that's really rough. Those sort of situations really shine a light on belief. When my gran died, I remember a cousin rather casually implying that, despite the vicar's sermon, as she just believed in God in the way most old people did and wasn't a 'Christian', unless there'd been some great deathbed come to Christ moment (when she'd been comatose in the final week), she'd not gone to Heaven.

I was raised Catholic, so from birth I was taught about God and the Bible. Hard not to take it in wholesale when your family, teachers, friends and priests would back each other up. I think it also had a knock on effect with all other kinds of supernatural beings. If Jesus, a living God with incredible powers existed, then so did Father Christmas and Dracula. I was a right gullible idiot. Growing up though, life takes the shine off faith. I hated the phrase ‘God gives his strongest followers the heaviest burdens’. My Dad battled with dementia for four years, he fell down the stairs and broke bones in his neck, the surgery went okay, but he got an infection, it was palliative after that. After he had passed I sat with him for a little while, oddly calm, and all I could think of was, ‘ so do you go to heaven with dementia? Living for eternity with a distorted personality and not knowing what’s going on? Or does your original self somehow get downloaded from some kind of back up spirit server?’ and I thought, yeah…neither are likely. The sense of community though, and people who genuinely want to help I can’t fault.

Thanks, glad you got something out of it. It's one of my favourites too. Jesus Roadshow?! Sounds even worse than the ones headlined by Mike Reid and Savile. It does make you wonder how many people in the church feel like it never really clicked for them either, but stuck it out regardless.

Thanks for sharing this, it might be one of my favourite pieces on here. Also very relatable - I'm a vicar's kid and was loosely involved with the church (i.e. enough to reach the bullying threshold, but not enough to really feel part of it) until my mid-teens. I always felt like a fraud and assumed it would click for me at some point, but it never did. I finally walked away from it all after being involved with a Christian youth group that did a Jesus roadshow. Thought I might have some kind of epiphany, but all it did was make me suspicious of group pressure and sentimental music. Not a bad life lesson, frankly.

Jesus getting left on the cross and corpsing because of the Coronation Street trumpet tie in was brilliant.
