I think the consensus is, at best, he could've given the family some peace, as from what I remember of a very in depth Channel 4 documentary a few years back, everyone who was there that night clearly made a pact not to talk to the police or anyone else about what happened. Consensus from YouTube commentators on the other hand, is very much "he did it!" and that it's what he'll be remembered for. It's rare to get a comment on any Barrymore-related vid that doesn't mention swimming pools.

Interesting description - can't think of another sleb who inspired such warmth as Barrymore. I never followed the Swimming Pool Tragedy closely and I honestly have no idea if he's generally regarded as guilty-as-sin or stitched-up-by-tabloids. I did (from a remove) feel sorry for him though, cutting a sad figure given how loved and cherished he was. All his material sounds fucking dreadful (not funny and grossly offensive) but given that was basically par for the course at the time, I have to say, the man was hard working on stage and charismatic. He also seemed incredibly self destructive, which obviously isn't terribly surprising given that he lived a self-loathing lie for years. The whole thing is very sad because in a better world he could have been a pioneering gay celebrity icon, like Lily Savage. Instead he just got erased because he made everybody uncomfortable. Honest question, if anyone happens to pass here and knows - is the consensus that he killed that poor young guy? Or was it just a horrible accident at a reckless decadent party? Anyway, there you go. I guess he's off somewhere in comfortable exile from the public eye. Hope he found some peace. Unless he's a filthy murderer in which case I guess I hope he's haunted and miserable..? Yeah, that'll do I suppose
