Ah yeah, definite vibes of Foley's wife when they cut to Keith's missus wincing at ringside. Poor sod. Poorest sod of all the poor sods. They're not books, but both Vice series Dark Side of the Ring and Tales From the Territories are absolutely chock-full of all that scummy madness, and usually up on YouTube or Dailymotion or somewhere without looking too hard. A Dim Mak curry, or 'the five-point exploding arse trick'
Chris Mall
Brutal watching Keith here, I would usually think there is hubris on his part thinking he can jump in at the top and compete, but his personality doesn’t come across like that. He seems a relatively kindly man with a demeanour completely at odds with his chosen sport. Having his wife and kids witness his battering was the bleakest cherry on the cake. It reminded me of a wrestling documentary with Mick Foley where he invited his wife and kids to watch him face the Rock. During the match the Rock repeatedly kept smashing in the head with a chair and there was blood everywhere. Cut to his wife and kids ringside completely hysterical, crying at the witnessing of their dad being beaten brutally up in front of them. Rawlinson just wanting to be part of something he enjoys, somewhere where he believes he belongs, then having reality literally breaking his legs. Interestingly you see Keith’s attitude today writ larger amongst a generation of kids who found fame as influencers and gamers on media platforms. Now with money and a level of fame, bored of playing Fortnite 12 hours a day, they think they have the talent to be musicians and top flight boxers. None of them with the hard fought experience or paying of dues, just thinking they can jump straight in at the top and fight Mike Tyson. I’m currently about 80 pages into your Smoke & Mirrors and Steven Seagal book, halfway through the chapter on Brian Pillman. The WWE seems to be an organisation filled with crazy characters and a ‘darker’ side out of the ring. As you seem to know your wrestling onions, are there any books you would recommend that covers the outside of the ring stuff? Stories of wild excess and back room shenanigans and tragedies from the 80s – 90s? It’s so hard for me to sit back here in this studio, looking at a guy out here, hollering my name!—When last year I spent more money, on spilled liquor, in bars from one side of this world to the other, than you made! You’re talking to the Rolex wearing, diamond ring wearing, kiss stealing, whoo! wheelin dealin’, limousine riding, jet flying son of a gun and I’m having a hard time holding these alligators down! – Rik Flair (Just as an aside, when I read in your bio ‘Master of the Dim Mak’, I didn’t know what that was, and assumed it was a kind of curry dish. Odd flex I thought, maybe there is a culinary essay somewhere here, I know now it’s a much dangerous art, and hope to see it on https://www.reddit.com/r/TheMcDojoLife/ on Reddit)

Fantastic. We must be practically the only two people to have covered it.

Needed a scene of Cowell giving withering assessment of a dropkick.

“Gotta protect the business”. Still, that was brutal and Crabtree etc took the piss with Rawlinson. Wonder what Rip thinks of it all now. He probably would gone on Tough Enough.

I wrote a review of this show a few years ago for Scott Keith's blog if you want to have a look: https://www.blogofdoom.com/2021/02/02/the-big-time-the-original-tough-enough/

Absolutely pig-sick I didn't think to say this myself.

Astonishing. Is that the Butterfield Diet they put him on?
Alison Eales
Weirdly reassuring to know that reality TV has always ruined lives.

And it is established that you can take your 'vitamins' if you say your prayers, brother
Ciaran Colley
He should have taken the 'vitamins' cunningly supplied with that builder's breakfast masquerading as an athletic diet. But obviously his Christian beliefs meant that getting a twatting was the more righteous path. What would Jesus do? Take the f***ing 'roids, Keith!!

A bit that sadly didn't really fit in the video was Big Daddy introducing himself with the line "my grandmother weighed 23 stone"
Ross Merryweather
Your mum looks like Big Daddy, pass it on.
John Churchman-Conway
Poor sod though. Almost tragically gormless. You get the feeling that if he'd chosen embroidery instead of wrestling, he'd still have ended up getting physically mauled by some angry psycho in a leotard while his embroidery trainer shouted abuse at him

[runs him over with a coal truck] "Get up, lad"

'All wrestling's fixed, except t' bouts tha'll be in. Tha'll get shit kicked out o' thee'
