Fyi, before digging a hot wall, get some water in a channeled out tile: the dwarf will escape running through the water first, and it just works! I'm pretty sure I did read this in the wiki. May no more dwarf have to commit such sacrifice!
I think it ended when the whole area was flooded and then they never bothered to rebuild it
