No, that's OK, I actually like the rules! It's only I thought they could be exploited. It think they're all great and create a gritty atmosphere. Looking forward to the campaign :)

Sounds like you shouldn't use these rules then. They work great for me. PCs are sure they're deep sleepers? Sounds to me like they get ambushed or an animal shreds their pack. Being a deep sleeper in the wilds is a bad thing

Seodoth .

I understand, but I feel the players will contest you on this. They will argue that they are deep sleepers, tree lovers, or that they actually feel very safe when party members are taking watches compared to resting in a shady town inn. They are adventurers and thus are accustomed to the quirks of resting in tumbling hills, on howling mountain peaks and even spooky forests. It falls into the problem of a DM declaring how the players feel about something.

One can't cover ever possible situation in a short description and I feel it's good enough to derive good calls from. In the case of a party letting the wizard sleep to get arcane recovery, that should work as long as the conditions are met, e.g. warm, dry, not half alert, etc. Good rest needs to be actual rest though, so even if you're in the wilds and other people are taking watch, you still might only get rough rest if you're being disturbed by noises in the night. Nobody will get good rest in a haunted forest, even if there are no encounters and no watches, or there are 3 people in watch and one sleeping. They're haunted woods, they're spooky, you're going to be on edge. The point I'm trying to make with the resting rules is that context matters and not all rest is created equally. This is an extension of the core 5e rest rules, just taken a little farther.

On the card the Rough Rest doesn't include the point of 'the need to rotate watches' which you've outlined below. If you're going through with this, this may need some further working out. What if the party camps in the wilderness but exclude one party member from taking watches so they can get their spells back?

Not even remotely. Why should a person's dexterity count for anything when they are unconcious? Who is going to be easier to hit, the totally free person with 10 dex, or the person who is tied to a pillar and can't move but has 20 dex?

Question, doesn’t giving advantage on hits when a person is restrained or incapacitated fixes the problem of people having AC bonuses thru their shield. Etc
