That's totally different. Intent is everything. You didn't intend to cause offence, and when you were unsure if you did cause offence, you explained yourself and apologized. You gotta appreciate and respect people who check themselves and their actions. Not to say everyone should walk around on eggshells, we're all gonna offend someone, and sometimes you just can't avoid that. People are different, different things offend different people. But, massive respect to anyone who tries to be a decent person and holds themselves to a kind standard :)

I've always wondered what the point of a back-handed compliment was... Is it the same as "awfully good" which doesn't make sense either... But you are right - give a real compliment, not a back-handed one...
