The problem is, too often they're using platitudes to prevent themselves from acknowledging your pain. They think they're being helpful but the 30th time you've heard "they're in a better place" or "well things could be worse" you're ready for some combat. If you really want to be kind to someone who is hurting, sit with them. Enter into it with them, REALLY listen to what they are saying, or listen to what they're not saying. Know that you cannot fix the pain. You can only help them carry it. If you must fill the silence, say things like "this really sucks," or "I can't imagine how much this hurts," or the best "just know that I love you, no matter what." Positivity can become a toxic shield against genuinely acknowledging and validating another's pain. They need to feel seen, they need to feel heard, they need to feel loved. Yes, it hurts to do that, it's much harder than the other approach, but it's also healthier, for everyone.
