The psychology of abuse is complicated. People don't leave their abusers for a long time (if ever) because they are conditioned to stay. The abuser trains them to believe that they don't have an out. You cannot be treated that poorly and still think like a regular, free person."
God, I know I'm a broken record. I know, but it's important. I've been estranged from my abuser for 20-something years, and I am still dealing with the things he did to me and my family. Domestic violence in the West has only increased over the last 20 years. It is a rising norm that pervades gender, race, and even age.
We need to talk about how to treat people right. We need to talk about what happens to people when they are controlled by another human being. We need to understand what living in fear for your life and the lives of children does to a person. My mother was beaten, humiliated, sexually abused, and worse for twenty years, and she still summoned the strength to get me and my siblings away from a monster. And I believe without question, I would be dead if she hadn't.
Please, please, all of us, exercise compassion, empathy, and genuine care towards victims.
My family are not the majority, we are the exception - we got out - alive.
There are millions of terrified men, women and children who are never gonna get that.
We have to do better now.

This hits close to home as me and my siblings were verbally abused and some time physically abused by our step mom and I felt like shit bc I’m the oldest and couldn’t protect them as much as I wanted to the worsts thin that i had witnessed was my brother be molested by my step moms mom who was staying in the house I ended up polling her off him and telling my brother to go to my room while she then grabbed on to me and was trying to take me down which didn’t work bc I’m A lot stronger than her. I called CPS and they did nothing about it. my brother now has ptsd from it and you can’t even bring up mu step mom or her mom with out him braking down this is a real problem and needs to be fixed it’s not ok to do anything like that to a living thing and the people that do will burn in hell
