My mom has some survivors guilt about everything she’s overcome, from domestic violence to poverty, to raising four traumatised children with a deranged man hounding her. She has survived. She sometimes jokes that she’s a cockroach because she survives no matter what.
I wanted to remind her that she’s a force of nature that survives because she chooses to. She chooses to be strong, she chooses to heal and process and move forward. And that she should own that so proudly. Her very nature is choosing to survive and make the best of life.
Text message between me and mama:
Me: You are a resilient wild plant and you deserve to survive because you make it happen. Love you.
Mama: Why… thank you. Love you my strong brave kind little girl.
