You'll get a chance to take your words back and apologise (if you want). If you succeed you have committed to the most positive response. If you fail, most damage negated but leave early on a neutral terms.

Part of me is think based on previous interactions with the character in question

Honestly its a hard choice, but I lean towards time spent with one another and affection. Example. You wouldn't give someone you barely spent time with a second chance to mend things. But with someone you been through good/bad times with, will get more options to save to the situation.
