See, to me, it looked that Auton *was* sitting on the right-hand side of the car. That's why I thought it was the one driving. I'm so glad here injuries weren't worse! I'll definitely be keeping an eye out for the Doctor taking her by the hand from now on. :)

The Auton unmasked by the Doctor at the start was not the one driving -- in Britain, the driver is on the right-hand side of the car, so the Doctor was sitting on the passenger side. Also, when the Doctor and Jo run off, you might have noticed Jo trips over a rock with a rather loud "Ooof!". This was almost the first day of filming for the story, and the production team hadn't quite realised how extremely near-sighted Katy Manning was without her glasses. She did actually badly sprain her ankle, and they learned after that to always have Jon Pertwee take her by the hand in chase scenes... :-)
