This was William Hartnell's last acting performance; he died about two and a half years later, in April 1975. The original plan was to have him play an equal role alongside the other Doctors, but the state of his health made that impossible. All he could do was sit in a chair and read his lines off cue cards, being unable to memorise them. These little bits were all pre-recorded in a single day and played in to the TV monitor serving as the TARDIS scanner so the others could react to him. It's a sadly diminished portrayal of the first Doctor, but the writers deserve praise for not settling for a throwaway cameo appearance, instead managing to keep him involved in all four episodes.
