This is a great story with so many firsts, a new companion, new title sequence, new logo, the first appearance of the Sontarans and something I think you missed while watching, the first time the Doctor refers to his home planet as Gallifrey. It's a pivotal story for all those reasons, but it also has brilliant dialogue, great and memorable characters like Linx, Irongron, Bloodaxe and Ruebish and a superbly inventive plot with Linx transporting scientists and the equipment he needs from the future into the past so that he can repair his spaceship. This story has all the hallmarks of Robert Holmes, who by now has established himself as one of the most consistent DW writers along with Malcolm Hulke (who writes the next story and unfortunately, it's also his last) and David Whitaker. It's no surprise then that Holmes takes over as script editor during the next season and along with new producer Phillip Hinchcliffe, gives us perhaps the most consistently great period in DW history, almost certainly in classic Who at least. I love how this story introduces Sarah Jane and immediately establishes her as not following the Doctor around like previous companions and constantly asking questions and at one point, even doubting the Doctor and plotting against him. This shows right off the bat that Sarah Jane has a mind of her own and won't tag behind the Doctor and accept everything he says at face value. It immediately establishes her as something different from most of the other companions we've had up to this point, especially the one right before her. Don't get me wrong, I love Jo and she's definitely Pertwee's best companion, but we did need something different after three seasons of the same thing. Sarah Jane has a wonderfully contentious relationship with the third Doctor, mixed in with a lot of snarky humour and back and forth between the two. I quite enjoy the Doctor immediately sensing her strong feminist outlook and making mildly sexist remarks just to mess with her.😅 Sarah Jane is more strongly associated with Tom Baker, so her pairing with three often gets overlooked. I think this is unfair because Jon Pertwee and Lis Sladen have brilliant chemistry. It's a similar situation to Rose with the ninth and tenth Doctors. Another gem from Robert Holmes, and considering he's about to become script editor, it's far from his last. Very soon he'll have a hand in every script and thankfully, unlike most previous and the incumbent script editor Terrance Dicks, he will continue to write stories of his own as well.
