I don't think holding hands is more or less intimate than sex but its a different kind of intimacy as hand holding is purely affectionate there's no lust behind it you would only do it with someone you care for. Sex on the other hand can be purely for gratification and in some ways not intimate at all.

Personally I feel like handholding is more intimate than sex, because other people will see you holding hands, which gives them some indication as to the nature of the relationship (which is none of their freaking business). Sex happens (usually) privately, so no one knows how close you actually are. But even more intimate than either of those is brushing someone's hair.

One thing implies another. So if you can have casual sex with someone, you can also casually hold their hand. Vice versa, both acts of hand holding and sex can be incredibly intimate. Personally, I think sex is more intimate than handholding.

Well now I feel like I'm weird 😅 I do think hand holding is kinda intimate but I like holding hands with my close friends and I wouldn't mind that much if I met someone who I liked and they wanted to hold hands. Then again I'm demi so I wouldn't exactly be hooking up with people anyway unless I felt a strong connection with them and that's very rare. So no strangers in bars for me 😆

my biggest hurdle with defining this kinda stuff is that it's contextual. casual sex would be far less intimate than a large proportion of the handholding happening at any given time i'd hazard a guess that we're looking at a surprisingly close split between intimate handholding and intimate sex on a global level, and i'd also suggest that sincerely loving acts, whether holding hands or having sex, can be equally intimate everyone's right!

Hmm... depends on the sex. If you're making love then I can't think of a more intimate activity. If you're just banging one out on/with/in a Tinder date, then long periods of hand holding is definitely more intimate.

Intimacy being subjective in general, I think hand holding is more intimate than sex. It’s public and symbolic and speaks to more comfortability with someone, imo.
