Patreon Livestream: How Black Holes Feast with Dr. Matt Caplan
🕑 Added 2025-05-08 19:39:27 +0000 UTCSee our first ever scientist on scientist interview with Dr. Matt Caplan. Dr. Caplan is computational nuclear astrophysicist and longtime Space Time writer. Matt and Matt discuss how real black holes feast on their surrounds and grow to such enormous sizes. We recommend this paper as primer: https://arxiv.org/abs/2312.07647

We will have more!

I really struggle to buy into the direct collapse explanation for SBMH 1. The claim that the low metallicity in the clouds is what allows the black hole to form seems to contradict the fact that stars formed in other primordial clouds. 2. Said differently, how can H and He compress to black hole density without first igniting a fusion reaction, which would stop the collapse? 3. Even if we allow that there were a black hole formed, wouldn’t the radiation pressure disperse the cloud as the black hole grew larger and the luminosity increases? That said, I loved the chess board end game analogy! This was a great idea to have a hangout with another professional. I hope we get more!
