RS232 interface with the 6551 UART
🕑 Added 2023-03-31 20:21:28 +0000 UTCAs promised in the last video, here's a look at the 6551 UART and how to interface it with the rest of the 6502 computer. This video only covers the hardware aspect. Perhaps I rambled a bit too much, but it was starting to get long and figured it would make sense to break out actually programming the 6551 into another video. As always, any feedback is appreciated before the video goes live.

Thanks for this Ben! I added a VIA with lots of web help just before your video and kit came out. Boy, your video and kit would have saved some time! I am so happy that others will be adding serial ports to their BE6502's. It really turns the project into a 'real' computer capable of doing fun things and having a real development and debug capability. I can't wait to see what else you have for us in the future! Referencing David Dawkins comment above - agree. In particular the VIA chip … we know the 6502 is the processor, the ROM is the ROM, and the RAM is memory - but the viewer might not remember what the VIA chip is (or not seen earlier videos).

Great video Ben. Looking forward to see how you handle interrupts as this device will need to be able to alert the cpu when it receives data.

What software do you use for the schematics? Would you consider making the original files (or at least PDFs) available for patrons?

Great stuff. The only thing I wanted was a very brief reminder of what all the chips were, perhaps with the block architecture. It gets covered bit by bit as we go through, but I couldn't quite remember what everything was upon first visit to the breadboard.

AFAIK, the > "triangle thing" on a pin diagram means edge triggered, not active low. Usually seen on clock inputs.
