π What Happened To... Gretna? Ep.3
🕑 Added 2024-07-31 10:00:05 +0000 UTCOn the England/Scotland border sits Gretna, a place synonymous with people having a quickie wedding, but their football club hit the headlines in the noughties after reaching the Scottish Premier League and The Scottish Cup Final, having not long before competed in the English FA Cup.
Confused? Clayton and James cover a romantic tale of a club who came from nowhere but unfortunately the dream died just as quickly.
And if you think it's tough getting out of England's non-league, being the best in Scotland doesn't even guarantee promotion.

Yeah think Jeff used to call him the good Dr? My dad and I used to watch soccer Saturday religiously and were fully invested in the Gretna story for those years. Great pod

Think 4 teams have progressed from lowland league in Scottish leagues too. Edinburgh City, Spartans, Bonnyrigg Rose and Kelty Hearts

People will probably remember Jeff Stelling referring to Dr Deuchar as he was a qualified doctor. He also got friendly with his Gran who watched Soccer Saturday every week

Spot on about investment on their rise through the leagues James. They signed a lot of guys with top division experience like David Bingham, John O'Neil, Derek Townsley etc. Compared with guys on 20 to 30 quid a week they just outclassed most teams
