Free tier of Slack doesn't keep very much history, if that's a consideration.

I think a public discord with patreon only parts sounds like a good idea. I help manage another discord for a youtuber I support on patreon and that’s how we did it over there.

I would lean to making it open to everyone. Perhaps on the discord you can make a channel restricted to Patreon supporters only, but there will be more engagement and cool ideas thrown around if it’s made available to more people.

It’d be fun to chat. I’m no fan of discord, but it’s probably the most popular, free solution that doesn’t require a neck-beard-y user base. I suspect we’re all more grease-monkey…y.

would absolutely agree that discord is not a good repository for information, and can definitely say it’s search function is not very good. though as a place to chat it is quite nice.

I’ve never been a fan of discord for a repository of information. I don’t like the chat room-esque style of it. I like being able to search and find information and Discord doesn’t do that as well as other options. If all you want is a chat room then go for it. I’d suggest Reddit for a depository. It’s searchable, it allows conversation, it’s free, it can be made private. Can be moderated.
