Damn i have paused for a while due to computer problems and now i have a hard time to find the point i dropped off...

Artman

He’d know the basics, if he was a civil engineer, one of those things they cover in college. Heck I know, mostly, because hey you tube and stories.

Aaron Mcmaster

Calcium is lime, and the reason it's not ground is that you don't need to. You cook it, and it becomes a powder on its own. Making lime in the old fashioned way wasn't very precise, so some is overcooked and looses it's reactivity, some undercooked and keeps its shape as a shell.

Fun chapter! I wonder if Aranya's belief in Thediem is what grants power or if Thediem innately has power.

Chrystal 1776

*takes notes* thank you very much I'm gonna go look into that myself 📝

Skoll789

calcium carbonate specifically, which is then cooked to cause chemical reactions that are really interesting but not best explained in a comment section about a fantasy story, to my chagrin.

Skoll789

Limestone was a thing well before the romans, it was used in quicklime, which hardens when it reabsorbs CO2. The roman stuff used volcanic ash which contained silica. This meant that adding water caused it to crystalize and bind far better.

Skoll789

Portland cement is made with limestone. Hence why cement plants are often set on big limestone quaries. Quicklime is used in mortor going back hundreds of years though, but thats also made out of limestone. Also I don't think it ever specified if he was a civil engineer of any kind, but even so why would he know the details of cement? Hed only need to know how to make concrete, not cement in his job.

Chrystal 1776

I can't confirm that but that would definitely be cool.

ScarletIce

Wasn't saltwater also a big thing that they only recently figured out? There was some recipe that nobody could get to work until someone realized the recipes just said water because it was common sense at the time that you need to use saltwater.

Thedeim Is an engineer. How he doesn’t know how to make concrete? It uses lime, not limestone.

I think Rezlar might be able to be inducted into Thedeim's cult of Engineering.

Herakilla

Thanks for the chapter!

Raufgar

Ahhh, yes, I forgot about Gozer. I am the Key Master! Are you the Gatekeeper?

Meschmee

Calcium is a key ingredient that is commonly overlooked. It's why when you see old cement/ concrete there are small shells in there that didn't get ground up

Ruric

Fun fact: they actually discovered why roman concreete is so long, so, they would add in additional 'clumpy' powdered lime to the mix, right before pouring so it doesn't soak through/fully break down, what this does gives it a factor of self healing as, when the concrete ages and cracks it exposes the lime which reacts with the air forming some cement to fix the crack.

Geoff Urland

Just going to sidestep the whole god thing, Thedim? Makes sense though for someone who is a Christian and got his current gig from an angel to not want to think about his potential divinity too closely....

Geoff Urland

I think it's a Ghostbusters reference and not a 300 reference? https://youtu.be/vb5-LLQ3FjY

Lee Smith

Rezlar be doing the big think

Raufgar

Thanks for the chapter~! Love the 300 reference. Was he 7' though? Though he was taller. Also, must not forget human staircase. Roman concrete! Limestone and volcanic ash is the key!

Chrystal 1776

Oh if they figure out that limestone chunks are part of the reason the roman concrete lasted so long... When combined with magical reinforcement and rebar what isn't possible? 😄🤔

Kindred

oh glorious Thediem brings them Concrete... lets see if he will eventually bring them some more modern tech as the series progresses xD
