When she said, ‘Just the face’—and forgot about the clothes .The magic doesn’t start with a click. It starts with trust.

Her voice is quiet, almost apologetic:
“Just the face, okay? I’m not very photogenic. I don’t want body shots.”
How often have I heard that?
I nod. I always nod. Because I know: if the shoot comes together, no one will remember they wanted “just the face.”
I put on music-a track with more breath than words. The window is cracked open, the light is soft. She sits down. Looks off to the side. Shoulders tight. I click the shutter a couple of times.
“Was that already it?” she asks, unexpectedly surprised.
“It was. And it worked.”
She smiles. Not fully yet. But still-a smile.
The next fifteen minutes flow like warm water.
Just small talk-about coffee, about how hard it is to get up in winter.
I don’t rush. Her breathing loosens.
At some point between frames, the jacket disappears. Almost unnoticed.
“Can I just stay in the shirt? … It’s soft.”
“Of course. Only whatever feels comfortable for you.”
From that moment we’re no longer shooting a face.
We’re catching a state. Warmth. Quiet. Her.
She no longer asks what and how I’m framing.
She isn’t posing.
She’s listening to the music, touching her hair, simply breathing.
I say, “Try sliding the strap a little. Only if you want.”
She looks at me-and slides it. Not playing. Not for the photo. Just because.
By the end of the hour she’s laughing. Lightly now, openly.
“I didn’t think I could look this… real.”
I show her the frame. That very one. Where she fixes her collar and lightly bites her lip. There’s no pose. No explicitness.
But she is there. Completely. In a single frame.
“Can I see it again?”
And in that moment I understand: the shoot has happened. Everything clicked.
From there she’s ready to undress in front of you, and the first photoshoot goes perfectly.
Later she leaves. Jacket unzipped. The weather’s the same. But she isn’t cold anymore.
People sometimes ask:
“How do you get models to undress?”
I smile.
Two hours. Music. Humor. Charisma. Coffee.
And an absolute absence of pressure.
Everything else—they do themselves.
