You certainly can tell Tess has very little experience with social interactions. Probably the biggest reason that scene is happening isn't that Tess and Mira are dating, but that they're engaged in a lively conversation about a nice, safe subject that the others actually do care about some, but isn't something that could lead to bad feelings, even when they disagree. But Tess doesn't seem to recognize that.
