I don't know if it's part of Eastern culture or just Thai culture, but putting food on someone else's plate is a gesture that is usually done if you are courting someone or it's someone very close like your partner, it's a gesture of care and it's taken as a gesture of interest, that's why the interactions where Sam puts food on Mon's plate are so important.
