This movie was my first introduction to Pat Morita growing up, so I was surprised when I eventually saw him in Happy Days reruns and found out his Mr. Miyagi Japanese accent was fake.

I have wanted you to watch this movie for over a year. Then you watched a bunch of 80s movies and didn’t like them, and I was kinda scared to have you watch this movie. This was my favourite movie from age 11-19 or so. Then others took it’s place for my 20s, 30s, and into my 40s. About 7 years ago, I realised it IS my favourite movie. Still. Of all time. Because there is no better relationship in movies than that of Daniel and Mr. Miyagi. I was scared you wouldn’t like it, and I would have been so sad! Happy I was wrong about that. 🥰🥰

Why?

I'm so happy you liked this. My favorite one is the second one. I would almost recommend watching 3 first because 2 seems like a more natural conclusion. But if you have time in the schedule, I would love to see you react to Part II.

Growing up in Hawaii, I remember all us kids trying to "kick the waves" and stay standing. We exhausted ourselves with our "Karate" after this movie.

You MUST check out Karate Kid 2! Better than the original with continued character growth, exotic location, and what 80s movie would be complete without a wicked song. <3
