Another angle to consider is that they live on a Hellmouth, and the area has all kinds of weird things happening all the time. The humans that live in Sunnydale are going to get used to having to return to normal daily routine after something crazy happens. Something crazy is always happening.

To be fair, one can know exactly how a coroner is likely to act in real life, so it takes you out of the story when it's wrong. Vampires and giant mantises? Yeah, you're pretty much in the hands of the writer telling you how they act ;)

"Let me say this about that." The music supervisor for Buffy was amazing. I found so many new bands from this show. I think I first noticed it in "Never Kill A Boy...", but the band was haunting and ethereal -- Velvet Chain. But it's everywhere in the show. As for expectations: this is not a slasher show. First, it was a mid-season replacement, so this season was done in a bit of a rush. They are still finding their way here. At some point, they hit on a good structure: take an ordinary human frailty, and turn it into a demon. Then pair that with an "A" story, showing that (or similar) playing out in high school. They gain a bit more power in the storyline, because the "B" story can go very big, showing where our everyday struggles could lead. It's definitely NOT about fights and killing. It's about the battles we all face. But Buffy, always an optimist, triumphs over all the evil, both demon and human. And so can you.

Looking ahead at the rest of the season, I kinda like these two episodes, but everything after that is must-watch goodness. Looking forward to it.

Not a Buffy fan, but reading the discourse around these episodes reminds me of the first season of Supernatural -- if you can get past Bugs, you're good! I'm gonna go all GenX here and say, chin up, Ashleigh! You'll get through this big sad, whichever way you need to!

In terms of realism, you're not going to do much better. I think you have to buy into the world--that it has it's own rules. The primary rule is that the kids are smart, and the adults are dumb. Accept that and you'll have fewer headaches.

So, this is my first time watching. And to be honest, if I was just watching this on my own, I might have bailed at the hyena episode. Some students ate their principal and the next day, everything's back to normal? And they blame it on wild dogs? Come on now. A coroner's gonna know the difference between human and dog bite marks. Anyway.... I'm starting to understand why everybody's like "stick with it, it gets better." I imagine it would have to since it kept going as long as it did.

If you like the first season I highly recommend continuing, even if you don't do it for the channel (altho we all hope you will 😏) because the next 2 seasons are where Buffy really hits it's stride

I think there was some misreading or misinterpretation of things in episode 5. At the end, when Owen came back to Buffy the next day, he wasn't interested in her. He was interested in being around her because of the danger. It's akin to wanting to hang out with a superhero because of their abilities and because they kick ass, not because of who they are as a person. He's also in it for the adrenaline rush, and if that's the only reason he's there, he would be reckless. Those type of people tend to get themselves, and others killed. They're a liability. Yes, it's true that both Angel and Xander are also interested in Buffy, but Angel isn't around much, and he seems rather distant, and Willow is into Xander, and Buffy knows this, which should put him off limits. Also, even if other guys are interested in her, learning that a guy you have a crush on is only interested in you because you're a superhero, not because of who you are, is still going to sting. I do get the lesser investment, though. I only watched your before and after, and kind of skimmed the rest because of time, but these reactions are always good. Super excited for the next one.
